Heavy Snowfall Causing Delays in Europe

Due to heavy snowfall, multiple outbound flights from major international airports in Europe have been cancelled or are operating with some delay. Frankfurt airport, which was shut down earlier, is back in operation but with massive backlog, flight cancellations and delays. The majority of cargo freighters are rerouted via Amsterdam airport, where operations are back to normal.

Due to the flight cancellations, pier closings and trucking delays, traffic flow throughout Europe will be affected for the rest of the week.

Changes to European Air Security Regulations

There is a new European Air Security Regulation for European air exports (note: imports into Europe are not affected). As of March 25, the “known consignor” security status will expire for a considerable number of existing Agility customers.

With the new regulation (EU Regulation No. 300/2010), companies have to register themselves as a “known consignor” by a competent authority. The shipper needs to comply with certain standards in regards to their preparation of air freight, storage, infrastructure and training of employees.

The “known consignor” status will only be certified after an audit by the individual air security authority in each individual country. Agility will have no influence in getting the “known consignor” status. The registration will then be filed in the “Regulated Agent and Known Consignor” database: https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/ksda/login.htm.

Export air freight from “known consignors” will be excluded from any physical security check before liftoff. Export air freight from “unknown consignors” must undergo a security process – x-ray or hand search – before being loaded onto an aircraft:

X-Ray

  • Maximum dimensions of package: 175cm x 175cm (depending on the x-ray machine)
  • Maximum weight per package: 1000 kg (depending on the x-ray machine)
  • Will cause delay in the air freight supply chain
  • Additional charges will apply (please check with your local Agility representative)

Hand search/visual check (in combination with an explosive trace detection)

  • Inside and outside – freight has to be opened and repacked
  • Written confirmation and permission are required from the shipper to open package
  • Will cause delay in the air freight supply chain
  • Additional charges will apply (please check with your local Agility representative)

We recommend you work with your Agility representative to evaluate and decide which status will best fit your needs. If you have any questions, please contact Buelent Buelbuel (BBuelbuel@agilitylogistics.com).
